How to Install Pavers

Here are the basic steps involved in installing pavers:

First, choose a level site and remove all vegetation. This sounds easy, but it will be the most physically demanding step. In other words, do not neglect your site preparation.

Next, add a layer of gravel for the base layer. A base layer is added to provide a stable surface for the pavers, and improve drainage. The gravel helps to distribute the weight of the pavers evenly and prevents them from sinking or shifting. It also helps to drain water away from the pavers, which helps to prevent them from freezing and cracking.

  1. Compact the gravel with a plate compactor.
  2. Add a 1-inch layer of sand for the bedding layer.
  3. Level the sand with a screed board.
  4. Compact the sand with a plate compactor.
  5. Begin laying the pavers, starting at a corner and working your way out.
  6. Fit the pavers together tightly.
  7. Fill the joints between the pavers with sand.
  8. Sweep the sand into the joints.
  9. Vibrate the pavers to help the sand settle.
  10. Seal the pavers to protect them from the elements.

With proper care, your paver patio, walkway, or driveway will last for many years to come.
